Olympiacos Piraeus and CSKA Moscow will clash for the title in the championship game of the 2012 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four at Sinan Erdem Arena in Istanbul on Sunday 20:00 CET. The story within the story of the 2012 Euroleague Final is that both Coach Dusan Ivkovic and his counterpart Jonas Kazlauskas coached the clubs they are facing tonight. Of course before Ivkovic went to CSKA and took the Russian champs to three consecutive Final Fours, he guided the Reds to the trophy back in 1997. That is the only Euroleague title for Olympiacos to date; CSKA has six – the last one coming in 2008. Andrei Kirilenko, who was named the 2011-12 Euroleague MVP, will have a chance to win his first Euroleague title if CSKE can beat Olympiacos for the third time this season. Olympiacos stunned Barcelona in the semis by slowing the tempo of the game. It will be interesting to see if they try the same recipe against the CSKA team that came from 14 points down against Panathinaikos once they started pushing the ball down the floor. But, it will also be a defensive battle as Spanoulis will likely be the focal point of CSKA’s defense, and Olympiacos must control the defensive boards after getting away with allowing 19 offensive rebounds in the semis. But first a showdown between Euroleague giants – and the last two Euroleague champs – Panathinaikos and FC Barcelona Regal will take place at 17:00 CET in third place game. Before the dramatic loss in the Friday’s semifinals, Panathinaikos was the winner of seven consecutive Final Four games, so the Greens will find themselves in an unusual position when they take the floor against Barcelona. The Spanish champions might be without Juan Carlos Navarro who is nursing a foot injury, but will have a little extra motivation playing against the team that eliminated them from the competition last season and deprived them of a chance to play at Final Four in their own city !
